Sharks claim vital derby win over Lions

Cape Town – The Sharks have won their South African Super Rugby derby encounter against the Lions, running out 27-17 victors at Kings Park in Durban.

The Sharks secured a 14-0 lead with a quarter of the game gone thanks to tries from Curwin Bosch and Daniel du Preez with both scores converted by the flyhalf.

The Lions hung on, however, and struck back just before half-time with veteran centre Lionel Mapoe crossing the tryline for a converted score as the teams went into half-time with the Sharks leading 14-7.

The Lions tied up the match 10 minutes after half-time with a brilliant try that saw them cover the length of the field before flank Cyle Brink crashed over the line.

Bosch kicked a penalty in the 54th minute to give the Sharks a 17-14 lead and then Makazole Mapimpi extended that lead to 24-14 with a converted try after taking an intercept and running ove 80 metres to score.

The Lions through they had scored in the 74th minute only for the try to be disallowed. Jantjies kicked a penalty to cut the Shark lead to seven points at 24-17.

A Curwin Bosch penalty in four minutes from time put the game out of the Lions grasp, however.

Next week the Lions face the Stormers in Johannesburg while the Sharks take on the Hurricanes in Durban.
