City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services are monitoring the slopes of Table Mountain after a blaze began below Tafelberg Road on Sunday.
“At this stage we have approximately 30 firefighting appliances and over 200 firefighters on scene excluding TMNP and WOF crews. We are dealing with two fires – one below Tafelberg road and the other by Signal Hill. Several vehicles have been destroyed on Signal Hill and a few dwellings destroyed” said Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse.
“The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre is closely monitoring the fire. At this stage, there is no cause to evacuate”
There are confirmed reports of three dwellings affected on Trek and Higgo road.
The City thanked the public who had donated refreshments for firefighters, but requested that these be dropped off at the Roeland Street Fire Station and not on scene.
Roads that are closed due to the fire are Kloofnek Rodd and Bellevue Road towards Camps Bay, and Geneva Drive, Camps Bay.
Residents were urged to close all windows and doors to prevent draft and reduce heat.
Members of the public were also advised to try to reduce their exposure to the smoke from the fire.
Wildfire smoke irritates your eyes, nose, throat and lungs. Children, pregnant women, people with asthma and heart disease needed to be especially careful, the City said.
